Defense contractor General Dynamics operates in four areas: Information Systems & Technology, Marine Systems, Combat Systems, and Aerospace. Its Ordnance and Tactical Systems (OTS) business unit empowers the U.S. military and its allies with an extensive range of products applied across all levels of strategic and tactical operations. Their expansive array of capabilities and services include innovative engineering and design, advanced modeling, simulations, system integration and management, precision machining and forging, as well as testing and evaluation.
In order to better leverage their innovative technology and enhance the security of the United States and its allies, General Dynamics OTS wanted to localize the operations and maintenance manual of one of their systems so that it could be employed to the benefit of coalition operations. Scribe Consulting's assistance was sought as a localization partner who could produce a high quality translation within the constraints of the laws of the US regarding the export of security systems, which require that only legal residents of the US may be involved in the process. Furthermore, only 16 out of the manual's 279 pages were available in an easily accessible format. The vast majority of the manual existed only in a static format that is not conducive to localization. The challenge here was to reproduce the style, graphics, and format of the original without allowing costs to spiral out of control.
Scribe Consulting utilized its extensive network of partners and relationships to assemble a team of highly skilled translators with applicable knowledge that met the legal requirements and committed them to a highly confidential working environment. Scribe then began training the team on the system technology and developing project specific glossaries. Meanwhile, Scribe was able to produce a localization-friendly mock-up of the source manual through the creative use of technologies such as optical character recognition (OCR). The use of state of the art localization tools and processes enabled Scribe to maintain high translation quality and consistency among the teams of multiple translators required to meet all scheduled project milestones.
Each of the solutions resulting from Scribe Consulting's expertise in technology and project management provided for lower translation costs, higher consistency in terminology and faster turnaround on the project. In addition, Scribe Consulting's network of highly qualified resources enabled them to produce a high quality translation with the utmost confidentiality in accordance with the legal requirements regarding the subject matter.
